It begins in Securus, a
subterranean facility originally built to protect an elite group of people in
case of nuclear war. When a biological weapon known as The Agent was released,
Securus was retrofitted to protect from the devastating plague that ensued. It
was the only facility prepared in time, leaving its inhabitants as the last
survivors on Earth.
There is a Leadership caste
that oversees the colony and general workers that maintain it. The story
follows the first-person view of Kagen Meldon, a 26 year-old Healer from the
worker class. While out in an adjoining cave system, one of his closest friends
is murdered. Kagen is unsure of what really happened, but he does know the
truth is being covered up. The danger this puts him in becomes all too real
when Leadership assigns Kagen to a position on what the workers call the Death
Detail. It is a deadly task, especially since it involves going to the surface
where the threat of The Agent is ever-present. If Kagen is ever to discover the
secret the conspirators are trying to hide, he must first find a way to survive
the Death Detail.
Mini
Interview:
BBB Q1: I’ve read
the synopsis of your book. I’m intrigued. What inspired you to write this book?
A. Maldonado: The inspiration for
the book started with the simple desire to write. From there it has continued
to grow. The original idea was just that, an idea. I had no clue of what the
story would really be or what it would become. All I had was the setting and
how I wanted the book to end. From there the story began to grow. The more it
did, the more I realized there was more story to tell. With that, the trilogy
developed.
BBBQ2: I see
that The Death Details is a dystopian mystery, which tends to be futuristic in
nature. Can you give us an idea of what to expect?
A. Maldonado: As far as the story itself, it is
really hard for me to classify it in a traditional category. The overlying
theme is dystopian and though it has elements of science fiction, it keeps with
more of a realistic feel. I have borrowed from my experience as an
Emergency Medicine physician to create unique twists and elements within the
story.
